OEM 1994-96 Impala SS Spoiler Installation

Preparing The Spoiler For Installation

  • If the spoiler still has the old adhesive tape attached, it is recommended that you remove it and apply new 3M tape.  It is a tedious process, best accomplished by soaking the old tape with 3M Adhesive Cleaner and using your fingers to roll the old tape off the spoiler.  When you remove the old tape from the OEM spoiler, you'll notice faint ridged lines that outline the area where the tape was placed.  The picture below approximates where the outlined areas are located.  I'm guessing that the space between the 2 pieces of tape, on the front edge of the spoiler, is there to prevent water from pooling and allowing it to drain off the rear of the trunk lid.
  • Cut each strip of tape long enough to provide a tab that can be used to pull off the Blue strip protecting the tape.

Instructions For Locating The Mounting Holes

  • Get some 2", or wider, masking tape to protect the paint on your trunk lid while refining measurements.

  • As shown in the drawing, measure and mark 2 spots 8-3/8" up from the bottom rear edge of the trunk lid.  I didn't use anything special for measuring, just a 10' long Stanley tape measure.

  • Centered on these 2 marks, apply a 2" wide strip of tape across the width of the trunk lid.

  • Now, measure and mark a line on the tape that is 19" in from the LH & RH edges of the trunk lid and apply a new piece of tape, centered on these 2 lines, straight down to the bottom rear edge of the trunk lid.

  • On top of the tape, re-measure and mark the lines from the LH & RH edges and from the bottom rear edge of the trunk lid, making sure that they intersect each other.  Where the lines cross each other is the preliminary spot for drilling your mounting holes.  The distance between the 2 preliminary spots should be approximately 19-5/8".

  • Check that the measurement between the centers of the bolts on your stock OEM spoiler are 19-5/8".

  • If there is a difference, adjust the position of the marks for the mounting holes.  Verify that the measurement between the 2 preliminary spots is the same as between the centers of the bolts on your stock OEM spoiler.  Verify that the measurements from the LH & RH edges are identical.  This will guarantee that the spoiler will be centered across the trunk lid.  Verify that the measurements from the bottom rear edges of the trunk lid to your preliminary spots are 8-3/8".

  • You should now have the mounting hole positions located, but..........

DON'T DRILL THE HOLES YET!

DOUBLE CHECK ALL OF YOUR MEASUREMENTS!

Instructions For Drilling The Mounting Holes

  • Start with a very small drill bit for the pilot hole and use an intermediate size before you drill the holes to their final size.  Remove the masking tape from the trunk lid.  Fit your spoiler without removing the Blue cover from the 3M adhesive tape.   Clean the areas where the tape will adhere to the trunk lid with an appropriate cleaner.

  • Reminder:  The tape on the edges of the spoiler will adhere best to the trunk lid if both pieces are at least at room temperature.

  • Now, remove the tape and install your spoiler.  Get the torque values for the nuts that go on the bolts and do not over-tighten.  Step to the side and admire your work!  You're done!

  • Note:  My installation only required a very, very slight massaging of the RH hole.  I was extremely happy with the outcome as I had obtained the raw measurements over the phone from a fellow selling SS parts in Michigan.  Good Luck!
