This installation was especially hard for me as I have a tough time with wiring diagrams.  It's the reason why 2 years have flown by before I'm starting to document this mod.  Actually, I'm beginning a second installation of a 1996 Impala SS floor shift in my 1995 Impala SS.  Putting together all the text, diagrams, and pictures is a case of now, or never.

There are some basic differences between doing the mod in a 94-96 Caprice 9C1 and a 94-96 Caprice or 94-95 Impala SS:

  • The 94-96 Caprice 9C1 doesn't have a Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS) and, consequently, doesn't have a Start Motor Theft Deterrent Relay installed.

  • The 94-96 Caprice Sedan/Wagon and 94-95 Impala SS does have the VATS system and Start Motor Theft Deterrent Relay.

To install this floor shifter in a 94-96 9C1, a Theft Deterrent Relay will have to be installed so that the PARK and NEUTRAL start function of the 1996 Impala SS PARK/NEUTRAL Position Switch will operate correctly.  If the relay is not installed, the engine will start in any gear.  Not a good idea!

The 1996 Impala SS floor shifter system has all of its electrical functions controlled by a Park/Neutral Position Switch on the shifter assembly and the mechanical functions are controlled by a cable to the steering column and transmission.
